In February 2024; WorkSafe NZ published a prohibition notice for the sale (including an offer to sell), and use (including installation) of the Serene Classic S2068 wall mounted bathroom heater, pursuant to Regulation 87 of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010. Serene S2068 heaters manufactured in March 2021 have a manufacturing defect, there have been several fires and overheating. Since May 2024, the S2068 Serene Bathroom Heaters have been recalled after they were found to have a defect by WorkSafe NZ.
This defect resulted in a number of fires - at least two of which have occurred since the recall was first issued - and it is now illegal to use the heater, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) said. After a select series of S2068 Bathroom Heaters were recalled earlier in March, the recalls have since been extended to include all S2068 Bathroom Heaters imported, sold or installed since 16 June 2018. Further voluntary recalls were also issued, of which some includedS2069 and S207T models, which WorkSafe prohibited the sale of in April.

Retailers are voluntarily recalling a wall-mounted bathroom heater after at least 15 fires or overheating events, the government says. MBIE is aware of about 28,000 of the heaters still in properties across the country, despite a compulsory recall and a prohibition to use. Fire officials advise using bathroom heaters only briefly.
