Having a similar problem, modern medicine cabinets are u-g-l-y! I found one at Pottery Barn that I don't hate. Another option would be to DIY or have someone build you the recessed shelves out of wood and then hang a mirror on piano hinges. DIY Medicine Cabinet.
I think it partially depends on what works for your bathroom layout, but when I remodeled I opted for a hanging cabinet/shelf instead, like this and just used a regular wall-mounted mirror above the sink. But you can also get recessed mirrors that don't really look like medicine cabinets per se but still swing out with some shallow storage. IMO, the big boxy obvious medicine cabinets look.
